Three refrigerant jobs from the Montclair hills, written up the way they happened

The R-12 holdout
Mid-century house on a steep lot. 500-series cabinet, original to a kitchen remodeled when a fax machine still counted as office equipment. Complaint: long runs, slow recovery after door openings, freezer fine. Readings on arrival: fresh-food 41°F, freezer -1°F. Condenser coil half-blinded with the usual hills mix — dust, pet hair, a season of fine smoke residue.
Era check against the serial plate: before 1994, Sub-Zero ran R-12; the 1994 model year brought R-134a, give or take certain PRO models; what the brand has introduced since January 2021 runs R-600a. This one was R-12, charged at the factory back when CFCs were still legal to manufacture. That single fact reorders the whole visit. New R-12 has not been made in decades; what exists is recovered, reclaimed stock, priced accordingly. So the first goal on an R-12 cabinet is always the same: prove the problem is outside the sealed loop before anyone thinks about opening it.
Cleaned the coil, watched pull-down across a full cycle, charge intact. Fresh-food settled at 37°F. No sealed-system work — on a cabinet this age, the best possible outcome. The owner asked when all this certification business started. Answer from the van: November 14, 1994, and it has not loosened since. The card shown at the door carries one technician's name and no expiry line. EPA does it that way on purpose.
Margin note for next time: if this loop ever has to be opened, the serial plate gets photographed first and the recovery cylinder comes in before a single fitting moves. The tag-first habit is the same one described in the model number and parts guide — the plate decides everything downstream, including which refrigerant is waiting inside.

The R-134a leak and the can that would not ship
Storybook remodel a few streets up from the Village. 600-series built-in, both sections drifting warm over two weeks — the slow kind of drift that says leak rather than fan. Oil shadow at a joint behind the grille. Pressures read across a cycle confirmed what the oil already suggested.
He had tried to buy a can of refrigerant online first. The counter rule stopped him, as it should: stationary-equipment refrigerant sells only to 608 cardholders. He was half-annoyed about it until the why got explained at the kitchen table. Note in the margin: venting went illegal for CFC and HCFC refrigerants on July 1, 1992; substitutes like the R-134a in this cabinet followed on November 15, 1995. A leak you top off is a leak you have agreed to feed — ounce by ounce, into the air over Montclair. The rule is not there to inconvenience homeowners; it is there because topping off and walking away is exactly what used to happen.

The isobutane column and the hydrocarbon rig
Newer infill build on a wooded lot, integrated column, refrigeration dated 2022 on the plate. Symptom: upper zone drifting, compressor behavior normal. The newest unit in these notes carried isobutane. The odd part about R-600a: EPA exempts it from the venting ban in household refrigerators - and we recovered it anyway, with the hydrocarbon rig, because it is flammable and the kitchen had a gas range. The charge in these systems is small, a fraction of what the old R-12 cabinets held, but small and flammable still earns ventilation, a combustible-gas check and no open flame anywhere near the work.
The fault itself turned out ordinary — a thermistor reading out of spec, column drifting on bad information. Part-level fix, serial-matched sensor, zones verified back in line. The refrigerant handling is what made the visit different from a 2005 version of the same call, and it is why post-2021 units get flagged in the schedule before the van leaves the shop: different rig, different precautions, same diagnostic order.
For the record, since a competitor's flyer claimed otherwise: companies do not hold this certification. Technicians do. Every person we send into a refrigerant job carries their own card with their own name on it; the business name appears nowhere on that document, and that is exactly how EPA designed it.

Why publish this at all? Because a refrigerant quote is easier to weigh when you know what the rules require of the person standing in your kitchen. Do older homes in the Montclair hills still have Sub-Zeros running on R-12?
Yes. Cabinets built before 1994 left the factory charged with R-12, and the hills still have kitchens where those units hold temperature without complaint. They can be serviced, but no new R-12 has been produced in decades — what exists is recovered, reclaimed stock — so on those cabinets the era is confirmed from the serial plate before any sealed-system decision is made.
Is it safe to keep operating an R-12-era Sub-Zero?
Operating it is not the issue; the refrigerant works in a closed loop, and a sound R-12 cabinet can hold spec for years. The questions arrive at service time: any work that opens the loop is regulated, recovery comes first, and replacement refrigerant is reclaimed stock with real cost. If the cabinet and compressor are healthy, repair is judged the same way as on any Sub-Zero — by readings, not by age alone.
What changed for Sub-Zero refrigeration introduced after January 2021?
The refrigerant changed. Newer refrigeration runs R-600a, or isobutane, which cools well on a small charge but is flammable — so the work happens with a dedicated hydrocarbon rig, a combustible-gas check and no open flame in the room. The diagnosis itself still starts the same way it always has: model tag, temperature readings, airflow.
